Affordable life cover premium

In response to the question “Why do I need life insurance?” one could pose a counter-question: “What happens to the people who mean something to you when you die?”

Life cover is a product that provides financial protection for the most important people in your life. It protects the wellbeing of your loved ones and prevents them from experiencing financial hardship when they can no longer depend on your monthly income or support as breadwinner after your death.

Life insurance companies offer you the opportunity to invest in the future of your loved ones before it is too late. If you are young and healthy, your monthly premiums will generally be lower so it is wise to seek affordable life cover before you turn 65. Depending on your individual risk profile you will be able to take out cover at an agreed premium that will provide a certain lump sum payout to those dear to you when you pass away.

Tips for moving to Cape Town

property in Cape Town

Making the move to Cape Town is completely understandable. Who can blame for you choosing the sparkling Atlantic Ocean, Table Mountain and sprawling white-sand beaches. However, before you land in the beautiful Mother City, become better acquainted with Capetonian culture with the following tips:

Choosing the right estate agent

Property in Cape Town is diverse, so choosing the right estate agent to find your home is an important step. Privately owned property experts, Knight Frank, preside over a range of spectacular residential Cape Town properties including property in the Atlantic Seaboard, the Southern Suburbs, Kalk Bay and the bustling city bowl.

Choosing your suburb

Some say that Cape Town is a hotbox of cosmopolitan culture. Here; you can experience the bustle of a cosmopolitan city, the peace of the French countryside and the salty sea air of an island getaway all within driving distance of each other. Cape Town’s suburbs are no different. If you’re an artsy type, areas such as Gardens, Tamboerskloof, Observatory and Woodstock will call your name; alternatively, upmarket suburbs in the Southern Suburbs such as Constantia, Kenilworth and Bishops Court are the perfect fit for families and business professionals.

Our roads

Cape Town drivers are notoriously laidback – perhaps a little too laid back – but, with all the surrounding beauty who can blame us? If there’s one challenge faced by newcomers, it’s getting acquainted with Cape Town’s main highway portals. Once you know how to navigate the N1, N2 and M3, you’ll be just fine. Once you discover the navigational benefits of Table Mountain, you’ll be set for life.

 Our food

Cape Town is gastronomic heaven. Along with a wide selection of fine dining options offering fresh South African fair, Capetonians enjoy traversing the various food markets that pop up on weekdays and weekends alike. The Hout Bay Market is an incredibly popular option, and while they may charge a little more for produce than supermarkets, it’s a fantastic way to meet shop owners, restaurateurs and locals.

Finding a job

If you are looking for a job, check out the job sections of Cape Town newspapers such as Cape Argus, Cape Times, Cape Business News and the Independent. Alternatively, websites such as Careers 24, Gumtree and Biz Community feature job listings that are updated on a daily basis.

Properties in Tokai

Tokai is a large residential suburb situated on the foothills of the spectacular Elephants Eye mountain range. The lush, leafy suburb is a nature lover’s dream, with a selection of off-road cycling routes and scenic mountain and forest walks.

Named after Tokaj – a range of hills in Hungary – Tokai was originally a wide open area dotted with various wine farms and quaint smallholdings. Today the suburb is predominantly residential, but a number of authentic Cape Dutch houses still stand among the more modern developments. The suburb was established in the late 1940s and built up quickly due to the urgent need for housing for the English-speaking South African soldiers returning from World War II.

Why insurance providers regard patients with heart disease as high risk

Patients who have suffered a heart attack or who show signs of cardiovascular disease are considered a high risk for insurers. While some individuals go on to lead healthy lifestyles after experiencing a heart attack, a percentage will continue to experience debilitating after-effects or permanent cardiovascular damage – a factor that may greatly reduce their lifespan. For insurers, a shorter lifespan means the individual will pay less premiums.

After-effects may include:
  • Arrhythmias – irregular heart rhythms
  • Cardiogenic shock – a sudden drop in blood pressure that will result in your heart being unable to pump enough blood to your organs
  • Heart rupture: permanent damage to the heart wall that may, in serious cases, cause the wall to rupture
If you wish to take out a serious illness cover policy or life insurance, don’t prolong the decision as the cost of premiums rise as you get older. Insurers who do provide life cover for individuals who had heart attacks or suffer from cardiovascular disease will determine the individual’s risk profile according to the severity of the condition and the steps the patient is taking to treat it. By being proactive, specific and honest about your condition, you are more likely to receive better insurance rates.

If you don’t like the rules, don’t play the game

All sports have evolved – they have become more competitive and equipment has changed considerably over the years. Take cricket for example; proclaimed to be a “gentlemen’s game,” this sport has experienced numerous deplorable acts such as sledging and match-fixing. It is an unfortunate reality that the more money that is being poured into the game, the more temptation there is to do “what needs to be done” in order to receive the lucrative pay-out.

Golf, on the other hand, has always prided itself on maintaining a consistent etiquette that contributes to the allure of the game. Golf rules extend to the decorum, which firstly addresses the required dress code. If you think that you can tee off at the first hole, wearing a pair of board shorts, flip flops and a vest, you are sorely mistaken; the marshal will immediately prohibit you from playing your round.

The correct dress code is as follows:

  • A golf shirt (preferably one which displays a golfing brand such as TaylorMade® or Mizuno® – they are made of the optimal material.)
  • Chinos (these can be of any colour, but general protocol is beige, black, cream or navy) Women wear a golf skirt.
  • Golf shoes (These shoes have spikes. They can be made of plastic or metal, but plastic – also known as “soft spikes” is more common. They serve to increase traction and balance.)
  • Golf glove – The glove is an essential piece of equipment. It is generally worn on the player’s non-dominant hand. Its function is to aid in the gripping of the club as well as to prevent blisters, which will occur if your hand keeps sliding on the rubber grip; which can become painful.  Through its ability to increase your grip, you will have more control and be able to attempt more powerful swings that will increase your overall distance.

As one would expect, golf equipment is constantly progressing. Brands are continuously advertising pin-point accuracy for all of your irons as well as enhanced sweet spots for longer distance tee shots with your driver. Many of the Pro Shops offer customisation of any of your clubs to ensure that you are able to use them to their optimum potential.

It is a game of patience and mental clarity and if you have the ability to achieve this, you will rapidly reduce your handicap.

Choosing the Right Hospitality Course in South Africa

Deciding what to do after you leave high school can be really tough. Some people are lucky and know exactly where they want to go and what they want to do. Others are faced with sleepless nights, tossing and turning over which course they want to take and whether or not this is the right plan for them. Below are a few tips that will prove useful to anyone who finds themself in such a position.
  • What?
It is of utmost importance to make sure that the course of study chosen is one that you will enjoy. This will help to keep your levels of motivation up throughout the course, as the idea of the final outcome is something to look forward to, whether it’s a career in surgery or hotel management.
  • Where?
Choosing an institution that you think you will be happy in is just as important as choosing one with a good reputation. Considering the department, lecturers and programmes are all important factors in making the decision regarding which environment suits you best. For example, if you want to get your international hospitality management degree, you need to consider which institutions provide practical experience and are recognised overseas.
  • How?
One of the most difficult aspects of furthering one’s education is figuring out how to fund it. The cost of tertiary education has shot up drastically in the past few years, with the average undergraduate degree now costing roughly R80 000. Student loans, bank loans and part-time jobs are most definitely options that need to be considered.
  • When?
One of the biggest mistakes that school-leavers make is thinking that they have to go and study straight away. Some people need to take a year or two’s gap between Grade 12 and 1st year. This allows them to gain some perspective and decide whether or not they are going into the right field of study. Furthermore, it gives them time to earn some money in a part or full-time job, helping them to reduce the financial pressures that first year can bring.

Too many people leave too much riding on the fact that they will figure out which career path they are best suited to on their first attempt. What is important to remember is that universities and colleges can generally be very flexible and accommodating with students who wish to change direction at a later stage (with a few exceptions, depending on how big the change is.). Stressing about the initial decision will only lead to panic and irrational thought, causing many people to choose a path that they are simply unhappy with.

Amarula Delicious Desserts

chocolate truffles
When you can’t decide between a fresh fruit cocktail and a delicious, creamy dessert then why not combine the two? Okay, so this can’t be entirely possible – this can be potentially horrible, but you can add a little bit of something to your dessert to spice it up. One of the best liqueur’s to add to any dessert is without a doubt Amarula; it’s smooth and sweet taste complements a dessert wonderfully.

The recipe below is for Amarula Cream Truffles; these will be gobbled up in one go and your family and friends will be begging you for more.

Ingredients:

1 kg dark chocolate

1 ½ cups fresh cream

500 g butter

1 cup Amarula cream liqueur

Cocoa powder

Finely ground almonds

Instructions:

Break up the chocolate into tiny pieces.
In a saucepan with a thick bottom, melt the chocolate and the cream together over a low heat; give the chocolate a stir with a fork now and then.
Cut up the butter and when the mixture has almost melted add the butter and stir until the mixture is smooth; keep the heat very gentle.
Remove from heat and stir in the Amarula cream.
Let the mixture cool and set – but not for too long – in the fridge.
On the side prepare the sifted cocoa powder and finely ground almonds.
Use a small spoon to scoop out walnut-sized pieces of the chocolate mixture, shape into balls or oval sizes and roll each one in the cocoa and almonds.

Chocolate Truffles

You can cover your truffles with glaze cherries or any array of other toppings; anything will go with this delicious dessert. These can be frozen, but just remember to serve them at room temperature. Amarula Cream Truffles are sure to be just as exciting as a fancy cocktail for your guests or family; it’s the perfect treat for any special occasion.

But do remember that there are many marula fruit cocktails for you to enjoy; which you can easily make at home. Amarula can be used in various other dishes too – they can even be used in some cuisine dishes for you and your family, but let’s face it, a naughty dessert will be best.
